Its minimal quality doesn’t dampen its power. I would argue the grief portrayed in the film is all the story we need.

Some might say the film is too slight that we don’t learn enough about her life before all of this. It is a graceful bit of directing in addition to a good performance. Wright wants to show off her considerable skill in a showy role (so rare for an actress of any age), but also understands the story’s dynamic would be lost without some other characters to help things along. For Edee, and the film, there is a proper resolution. As a filmmaker, Wright shows how a human connection can lead to an internal peace. With Wright’s performance in “Land,” we see her character emerge from the darkness of her experience. More from James Owen: 'The Little Things' eventually adds up We needed to see how the time alone shaped his life and shaped his character. There was no coda no moment where the narrative is reset to help the audience understand the impact of the story.Īnother example is “Cast Away.” Many complain that the ending, when Tom Hanks leaves the island, is the film’s downfall.

Yet, after a full story of isolation and seclusion, there was no reveal as to how that experience shaped or changed them. I think of Robert Redford in “All is Lost” or Will Smith with “I Am Legend,” and how those films were great showcases for their leading men. Often, these films see the isolation as a self-contained story with no contrast to what happens when a character exists outside of their isolation. Miguel elevates the dramatic tension of “Land” and creates a dynamic often lost with these (wo)man vs. “Land” does not venture into a romance at least not in the traditional sense. Slowly and surely, Edee learns to trust this rugged stranger. Edee nearly succumbs until discovered by Miguel (Demian Bichir), a hunter who promises to check in on her from time to time.

The decision to move to the middle of nowhere with nary a bit of survival skills is the act of a desperate person. This is state of Edee’s condition in the first act of “Land.” Stay away, Wright’s eyes suggest, I cannot possibly bear anything further. No matter how well-intentioned, people can say damaging things when you are coping with a loss. You are in pain and confused there is no reason to invite anyone into your sphere who could make it all worse. This can only be described as a defense mechanism. When there’s a loss in your life, there’s a feeling of interiority separating you from other people. It is not about a place, as the title suggests, but a state of mind. “Land” is not about surviving the elements, but about the lengths a grieving person will go to isolate themselves. The details are not all that important because the story is mainly symbolic. What would compel a person who barely knows their way around a hiking trail to move into the wilderness? The film hints at tragedy in the beginning though the extent of this tragedy is not fully illuminated at first. Notes and tones: Dave Stryker strikes again on 'Baker's Circle' She is ill-equipped to deal with harsh weather and furry predators roaming around in the darkness. Her cabin has breathtaking views, but no bathroom or heat. She plays Edee, a woman who moves out into the woods of rural Wyoming. Robin Wright makes her big-screen directorial debut with “Land,” giving herself this chance to pit her acting skills against nature. Inevitable jubilation at overcoming obstacles. Facial expressions, pensive stares and exasperated hand gestures tell the whole story.

They express confusion at new surroundings. Freed from distracting co-stars and pesky dialogue, a performer can flex the physical element of their craft. Often only sharing the screen with pretty scenery, the star gets the full spotlight. Actors love films that throw them out, alone, into the wilderness.
